On one of my visits to Palmetto Dunes, I opted for a bicycle to get around the resort using its extensive web of dedicated bike paths, an option popular with many of its guests (though there’s also a free on-call Dunes Buggy shuttle). My own route to the tennis courts took me through quiet tree-filled neighborhood of houses, villas, golf fairways, and lagoons. Not until I’d ridden beyond a guard gate did I come upon anything resembling commercial enterprises, though even those consisted of little more than an unobtrusive General Store; a bike, canoe, and kayak rental shop; a restaurant; the tennis center; a golf clubhouse; and the entrance road to the Marriott, one of two hotels (the other an Omni) tucked into this 2,000-acre resort. Only by then following the bike path north though a canopy of trees and then under William Hilton Parkway (Rte. 278) would I eventually leave behind the resort’s leafy neighborhoods for the collection of shops, indoor and outdoor restaurants, and art galleries (and some marina-view villas) in the Mediterranean-inspired buildings that line Shelter Cove Harbour.
There are really two faces to Palmetto Dunes. The largest section, which extends from the beach to the parkway, contains most of the lodging as well as the tennis, three designer golf courses, and most of the other recreational amenities other than those associated with the marina. And if you don’t opt to stay in a beachfront villa—which I did not on this latest trip—a bike is also a useful vehicle not only to reach the beach but to ride along it, since at low tide the extremely broad, hard-packed beach is an ideal natural bike path. You can, if you choose, ride on the beach for virtually the entire length of the island (rental bikes have fat tires suited to the hard sand). Beyond that, once you leave the resort there are some 50 miles of paved public bike paths that lace the island itself.
The Palmetto Dunes Tennis & Pickleball Center caters to a mixture of groups and vacationers. It consists of a main complex of 19 clay courts, four of them lighted for night play, along with 24 pickleball courts. Those are supplemented by an additional eight clay courts a five-minute walk away. A spacious, 3,000-square-foot clapboard clubhouse with a dark-green shingled roof anchors the main tennis complex. Inside is a brightly-lit pro shop as well as showers for men and women and offices for the professional staff. The reception is extremely friendly—these aren’t kids behind the desk but adults. All of them play tennis—many in fact are on teams—so they really do understand tennis players and their needs. Extending out from one side of the clubhouse is a long, raised wooden deck with a roof and views of courts to the right and left. The courts have been laid out in pairs, with California (angled) corners and a perimeter of trees and low shrubs. Some have small, shingle-roofed courtside pavilions and chilled water fountains.
Tennis Staff: John Kerr, a former professional player, oversees the entire tennis and pickleball operation. A fixture on the island since 1986 and at Palmetto Dunes since 1990, he has revolutionized the on-court programming, first by restructuring the roster of tennis teaching programs and later by being one of the first resort directors to undertake a full-scale commitment to pickleball. For tennis, the signature program is “S.M.A.R.T. Stroke-Next Gen”, a daily clinic that utilizes on-court, super slo-mo videotaping to provide instant feedback that helps maximize practice. His Director of Tennis Instruction, Eric Wammock, is a expert in video analysis and specialist in utilizing on-court video. An All-American at Florida State College and later All-Conference at Virginia Commonwealth University, Wammock went on to play professional tennis before settling on Hilton Head Island. He heads leads the club’s top tennis programs along with a a staff of personable pros—all with college or professional experience.
Tennis Programs: Much of the tennis programming—which runs the gamut of S.M.A.R.T. clinics to competitive-edge drills, doubles clinics, Cardio tennis, and clinics focused on serves and returns—runs back-to-back so that as a guest you can carpenter together a program day by day that could be as short as one hour or as long as 4½. Moreover, the junior programs coincide with the adult programs, so families can more easily come and go together.
Pickleball Programs: With 24 lighted pickleball courts, Palmetto Dunes Tennis & Pickleball Center ranks as one of the premier pickleball resorts in the country. There are group clinics for beginners and intermediates, pro-supervised ladder round robins that are at once social and competitive, drill sessions, and group and private lessons. Pickleball Touring Pro Sarah Ansboury heads up the instruction, staging pickleball academies several times a year and three-day adult pickleball camps during spring and fall. And as a further testament to its pickleball credentials, it is the site for one of the eight major tournaments for the World Pickleball Rankings.
Whichever sport interests you, stop by the pro shop, as I did, and you’ll find an experienced staff who are at once friendly and very service conscious. All in all, the center offers an excellent series of both tennis and pickleball programs.
Court Complex: The Palmetto Dunes Tennis & Pickleball Center has a total of 19 clay tennis courts and 24 pickleball courts altogether in two locations: the Tennis Center proper another bank a short walk away. Those at the Center fan out from a contemporary, 3,000-square-foot clubhouse. Palms, maples, pines and live oaks border the courts as do oleander and other low shrubbery. All of the courts have chilled water fountains though not all have shade. Four tennis courts and all the pickleball courts have lights on a token system so people can play when they want just by showing up.
Tennis Court fees: Guests renting through Palmetto Dunes receive two complimentary hours/day (based on availability) and pay $35/hour mornings and $30/hour afternoons for additional court use beyond that. For non-resort guests, the fee is $40/hour.
Pickleball Court fees: $25 from opening to noon; $20 from noon to closing; walk-ons, noon-4 p.m., $15; lighted courts, $20
Off Court
Beach: Palmetto Dunes fronts three miles of beach. It tends to be most crowded near the center, where the two hotels are located, but you don’t have to walk far to the east or west to have large expanses of sand all to yourself. And the farther you get from those hotels, the less obtrusive the architecture
Golf Courses: Palmetto Dunes itself has three designer golf courses, each named for its designer: Arthur Hills, George Fazio, and Robert Trent Jones. All three layouts have been named South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year.” There is also a golf school and new Toptracer Range at the Robert Trent Jones Course.
Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course: Designed by Robert Trent Jones and renovated by his protege Roger Rulewich, this par-72 course begins near the tennis center and flows east meandering around the system of lagoons before jogging down to the ocean at the par-5 10th hole and then working its way back westward. 6,122-7,005 yards.
George Fazio Golf Course: The most challenging of the three layouts, if not the most challenging course on Hilton Head Island, this Fazio course demands both accuracy and length. Bunkers and water hazards riddle several of its long par 4s. Par 70, 6,239-6,873 yards.
Arthur Hills: This par-72 course can be played as short as 4,999 yards or as long as 6,651, but whichever tees are chosen, the Lowcountry course stands out for its topographic beauty, ocean breezes, and off-balance lies.
Spa & Fitness Center: The resort itself does not have a spa or fitness center; however, both of the hotels do.
Palmetto Dunes 11 miles of lagoons afford opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, while the Shelter Cove Marina adds additional kayaking options as well as sailing cruises, fishing and boating charters, and dolphin tours.
Children's programs: There is much to appeal to kids at Palmetto Dunes—not only the beach, tennis, pickleball, golf, and lagoons but also Harbour Fest, held every Tuesday June into August at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina and consisting of live entertainment in the form of popular troubadour Shannon Tanner, street vendors, and fireworks (especially impressive over the harbour).
Restaurants: Dining can be as simple as sandwiches, salads, and drinks at the casual beachfront Dunes House to Continental cuisine at the lagoonside Alexander’s Restaurant or any of more than half a dozen places to eat at Shelter Cove Harbour, ranging from Frosty’s Italian ices to Mexican fare at San Miguel’s, seafood at Scott’s Fish Market, French bistro menu at Bistro 17, among others.
Accommodations
Palmetto Dunes has 1-to-4-bedroom villas, all with kitchens, and homes as large as eight bedrooms. These occupy various locations throughout the resort, including oceanfront, golf course, and the harbour. As a guest of Palmetto Dunes, you receive two hours of free tennis or pickleball court time daily per unit (based on availability). There is a three-night minimum at selected times of the year. Additional exclusive resort discounts available when renting through Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
Getting there

Played Pickleball 2 days in a row. Reservations were easy, courts were in great shape, and we were able to start on time. Good experience.
JO
My daughter and I played tennis 3 out of the 5 days we stayed at Palmetto Dunes. The courts were in phenomenal shape and we had a blast! The whole stay was fantastic from the trails we walked each day and restaurants were fantastic. Hope to come back again soon!
KM
We played lots of pickleball and enjoyed the Round Robin sessions! I took lessons from Nancy and they were fun, informative, and learned a great deal. Nancy is enthusiastic and motivating during instruction. Can’t wait until next year for another visit! I love checking out the pickleball on the webcam to see my friends and instructors!

Our fifth year enjoying spring in Palmetto Dunes and all it has to offer. Almost all the staff at the Tennis & Pickleball Centre are very friendly, patient, and helpful. (as I am sure they hear the same questions every day of the year!) Lots of round robin options for play and this year (2026) they have added a selection of Pickleball Clinics. Impressive.

We have a great time playing PB at Palmetto Dunes. It is a fun atmosphere that is well maintained.

Great facility…great staff…great Pros.
If you want to play Tennis…no better place on the Island.
Eric’s teaching is outstanding…for any level!

My husband and I spent 3 weeks in January at Palmetto Dunes. It was fantastic. We had never gone for more than 4 days and were concerned it may be too long – actually not long enough!! Next year we are going for 2 months. The tennis pros were fantastic. They not only provided excellent lessons but the encouragement and positive reinforcement was great. We did private lessons weekly along with multiple clinics. Our main instructor was Eric and Hank.
When we weren’t playing tennis we did some pickleball. Lots of fun.
We rented a house which was a great way to go since we brought our dog. Daily beautiful walks on the beach, tennis, etc. I highly recommend Palmetto Dunes for a great tennis and vacation experience.

I have played at Palmetto Dunes frequently over the years. It is a great facility, well-run, with plenty of pickleball clinics, instruction, lessons, and competitive play events. I also have taken private lessons there over the years, including my last trip. My last lesson with Andy Sklarin was terrific. Great combination of stoke instruction and paddle management, but Andy also adds a strong background in competitive strategy and tactics on both the doubles and singles front. If you are looking at lessons, Andy will definitely improve your game.
BW
Instruction for intermediate and advanced tennis is exceptional. Eric & Patrick
CD
We spent a month at Palmetto Dunes, and working with Patrick Walker was one of the best parts of our stay. His cardio clinics struck the perfect balance between challenging and fun. The groups were lively and welcoming, and Patrick’s coaching style is great. We also had semi-private lessons when we were the only ones at the clinic. He was insightful and always positive. He offers thoughtful and personalized feedback. Whether you’re refining fundamentals or advancing your game, you’re in excellent hands.
DM
I am new to the sport; participated in a few of the round robin sessions- everyone was happy and having a great time- also took a clinic which turned out to be a private lesson which was so helpful!
WR
We love the clay tennis courts. The court surface is maintained well except for the lines on several courts. It would be good to take those lines off and reinstall after new surface material is applied.

I’ve been coming once a year for the last 30+ years.
As I transitioned from coming with my family to now bringing my own, the one constant is the tennis center (now pickleball too).
I no longer play competitively by make it a point to start my day with Patrick at cardio tennis.
The staff is incredibly accommodating in helping to create/ organize a group lesson for our children.
There is something for everyone in our family and we are grateful and look forward to this time every year.
DS
We absolutely loved our tennis at Palmetto Dunes. My five year old had a series of lessons with Patrick that were high-energy, engaging, and centered on fun. He left Hilton Head eager to get back on the court.
I, a competitive adult player, also very much enjoyed my lessons with Patrick and Eric. Their attention to detail and high intensity sessions left me exhausted — exactly what I was looking for!
I recommend this place wholeheartedly and cannot wait to return! A wonderful trip and a great experience!
SH
Been here two weeks and have loved the high level of play in the daily morning round robins, I have also learned so much from private lessons with nancy as well!! Nancy has an excellent ability to evaluate and correct swing, serves, dinks and returns and present it in a courteous professional manner , I’ll make my visits w Nancy a biannual event !!

If you are looking for a learning facility where you will learn so much while keeping a smile on your face while running this is the place. We have been coming for years and look forward to improving our game from head pro Eric along with MC and Patrick. Huge personalities with the ability to make you better. All of the classes are top! My wife’s and my game have changed because of them.
Thank you – BLG

LG
Love playing pickleball here! The instructors are super friendly and knowledgeable! Thank you so much
KM
Did the pickleball 101, the instructor was great and the facilities are very nice.
RI
I had a great time at PD, enjoying their pros (Eric, Patrick), who gave me insightful tips into how I could improve aspects of my game. Recommend the Outfitter for bike rentals, which was useful to get around with, especially for those flying in. Wish there was a way to do pick-up tennis for those solo travelers wanting to hit more.
RM
Enjoyed the pickleball facilities, only complaint was getting pulled off the court because somehow my reservation (and the email receipts I had) didn’t flow thru properly into the Pickleball Shop’s system. Ended up that I got to stay on the court since I had all the email evidence but it seems the online system has glitches. Recommend saving your email confirmations and not just assuming “it’ll be OK” when you head to the court you reserved online.
BK
Always enjoy the folks at Palmetto Dunes. Took a doubles clinic with Eric and doubles round robin with Patrick. They were thoroughly enjoyable both from a tennis perspective (learning and competition) and from a friendly social interaction. What tennis is all about.
VC
I LOVE my lessons at Palmetto Dunes!!! Nancy is the perfect coach for me. She talks my language, listens to my concerns, and has made me a MUCH better player!!! She is awesome!
CC
My husband and I took the Competitive Doubles clinic with Patrick – he was great! He did a ton of live ball work encouraging everyone to work past their comfort zone. He shared actionable strategies for the entire class and made the class a lot of fun. Easy to book the clinic and the front desk checked everyone in without delay.
EM
I’m a regular and local at the palmetto dunes pickle ball center. Top notch facility, tons of lessons, clinics and expertise to help all have the most fun. This season I bought a new paddle and used the demo program along with instructor feedback to make a great selection. The CourtReserve app makes it very easy to view what’s available. I’d recommend more drill classes for all, daily dose is a great way to improve your game and then put it all together during round robins. Really have enjoyed working on strokes in power ball ball machine clinic.
Inside the shop, great deals on clothing, shoes, anything pickle or tennis and a hospitable staff to get you squared away.
Take more lessons y’all! You’ll find fabulous people on and off the courts in palmetto dunes, my favorite getaway down south
BD
We really enjoyed the 101 lesson with Nancy. She was very knowledgeable and shared clear information about the rules and strategies of the game. The hour flew by!
SH
We did the Pickleball 102 clinic and a private lesson. The instructors were great. We had a great time and learned a lot.

Our tennis team of 11 ladies came from Cumming, GA. We had AWESOME tennis instruction with Eric and Patrick for 2 days. We had so many “lightbulb” moments and great takeaways. Eric and Patrick are highly skilled, enthusiastic and kept us going the entire time. They were exceptionally helpful in all aspects of our game – and very personable. We can’t wait for our next trip back here! 100% recommend!!!

Excellent experience!
PL
There were 4 of us on vacation and we were looking for a place to play pickleball. Palmetto Dunes was very accommodating and reasonably priced. We had our pick of the courts. They have a very nice shop – a little pricey though. We didn’t do any lessons or clinics – just played within our foursome. Wonderful courts and plenty of them!
NA
My tennis at Palmetto Dunes was very good. Good quality of players in the afternoon drop-in and Patrick was fantastic. Took a private lesson with him and it has helped my game!!!! Also, people in the doubles games were nice and good players.
SH
I love playing tennis at Palmetto Dunes every time I visit HHI!!! They have the best people at the desk welcoming us in and the best pros!!!!
RB
My wife and I just back from a great vacation week at Palmetto Dunes. Quality Tennis, instruction and fun was one of the primary reasons we chose Palmetto Dunes. We thoroughly enjoyed the daily clinics and private lessons with Eric W. He made the learning fun and left us with key take aways that we’ve retained and look forward to applying to our game at home. Eric did a great job assessing, communicating and teaching. I highly recommend Eric if you like having fun while improving your game.
EL
Was in town for a meeting and made sure to get there all three days. Did lessons and group clinic with Eric W. All were all great fun, with right to the point instruction that sticks. The staff was very helpful as well. Looking forward to going back!
DH
My tennis team spent 3 days with Eric, MC, and Patrick and learned so much and had so much fun! They did a great job tailoring the sessions to our level. Will definitely be back!
CL
My husband and I planned a getaway to Palmetto Dunes with the goal of learning tennis, even though we’re at very different skill levels (he’s intermediate, and I’m a total beginner). We couldn’t have picked a better place! Over three days, we each did three clinics and one semi-private lesson with Eric Wammoc, and we were both blown away by the quality of instruction.
Eric is an incredible teacher – he gives clear, specific feedback to every player, regardless of the size or level of the class. He even uses video analysis to break down your strokes, which was a total game-changer. For example, I had no idea I was swinging too early with my racket face open, but after Eric pointed it out (always in a friendly, light-hearted way), I finally started to improve. He has a real gift for making everyone feel comfortable and confident, and somehow manages to coach players at varying levels within the same clinic.
Each 1.5-hour clinic included 5-7 different drills, focusing on techniques like offensive and defensive lobbing, volleying, and shots near the net versus deep in the court. The variety kept things fun and challenging.
The facilities are top-notch with plenty of well-maintained courts, and every staff member we met was kind and welcoming. We’re already talking about our next trip back. If you’re thinking about learning or leveling up your tennis game, Palmetto Dunes is the place to do it!
MH
Fantastic resort for tennis or pickleball. Easy to get play time and instruction. Lovely resort.
LB
Came for a tennis camp that a friend of mine set up for our USTA team. We drilled privately with Eric, Patrick, and MC for three days, three hours a day. We had the best time! The instruction was amazing, and we learned so much while having fun every day. This was our second trip, and we already booked our next trip for the fall.
SM

There were 4 of us on vacation and we were looking for a place to play pickleball. Palmetto Dunes was very accommodating and reasonably priced. We had our pick of the courts. They have a very nice shop – a little pricey though. We didn’t do any lessons or clinics – just played within our foursome. Wonderful courts and plenty of them!
My tennis at Palmetto Dunes was very good. Good quality of players in the afternoon drop-in and Patrick was fantastic. Took a private lesson with him and it has helped my game!!!! Also, people in the doubles games were nice and good players.
I love playing tennis at Palmetto Dunes every time I visit HHI!!! They have the best people at the desk welcoming us in and the best pros!!!!
Was in town for a meeting and made sure to get there all three days. Did lessons and group clinic with Eric W. All were all great fun, with right to the point instruction that sticks. The staff was very helpful as well. Looking forward to going back!
My tennis team spent 3 days with Eric, MC, and Patrick and learned so much and had so much fun! They did a great job tailoring the sessions to our level. Will definitely be back!
Fantastic resort for tennis or pickleball. Easy to get play time and instruction. Lovely resort.
I have coming down to the beautiful Hiltonhead island for 12 consecutive years and have always stayed and Trained at Palmetto Dunes. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world!!
