How to Travel Based On Your Tennis Preferences

From private lessons to weekly camps – plan your next destination with TRO’s guidance.

Do you decide on the location of your trip first? Or do you prefer to select dates that suit your schedule and determine which destination meets your budget? At the TRO office, we let the tennis programming lead the way.

Some resorts simply offer court time, forcing guests to figure out their hitting sessions based on court availability, while others have multiple clinic sessions per day lined up for various playing levels. While mountainside courts or a beachside breeze may appeal to some vacationers, we prefer to have our tennis programming locked in before we venture out of town with our racquets.

If you haven’t thought about the type of tennis resort you want to visit, this is the guide you’re looking for. From our perspective, tennis resorts offer their tennis programming in four ways. Those that don’t offer any programming, which, unless we’re not taking our racquets, and that’s unlikely, we won’t be visiting, as well the three formats we’ve listed below.

  1. Daily Drop-In Clinics: Typically held daily, these clinics can be booked in advance or joined last minute as space allows. This is the perfect option if you have your vacation planned and want to take your racquet but don’t want to plan your entire trip around tennis. This is also a great option if you travel with family or friends, as you can take the clinics while they enjoy the resort. Or if they are also players, they can join you in the clinics.
Usually, these clinics cater to various levels, so if you are at much higher level or have less experience than your friends or family, you won’t be forced to play alongside them. This may save your friendship and your vacation some agony. Most resorts featured on TRO offer daily clinics; below are three of our readers’ favorites.
    • The Resort at Longboat Key Club – Situated in Sarasota, their drop-in options include cardio tennis, singles strategy, doubles strategy, live-ball drills, and more.
    • Kiawah Island Golf Resort – A full, daily schedule is available at this honored South Carolina location.
    • Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt – Austria may be a dreamy location because of its backdrop, but tennis isn’t lacking either. (pictured below)

  1. Daily Tennis Camps: Guests seeking to mix in a heavier dose of tennis within their travels may choose the option of a daily tennis camp as it allows them to play longer, learn more, and spend more time inside the lines we love while still enjoying a beautiful resort setting. Certain resorts will offer drop-in daily camp sessions; however, you’ll get more from the sessions if you book in advance. There are many formats to the daily camp day; which option you choose is a personal preference. Some resorts offer five hours of group instruction in morning and afternoon sessions. By the end of these days, you will have earned the right to a spa treatment and a relaxing evening.

Whilst other resort camp programs offer customization and include private lessons, the beauty of the daily camp programs is that you can attend by yourself, with a friend or a spouse, or bring an entire group of friends. Not every resort offers daily camp programs, but some may only run this type of programming during certain times of the year. We recommend you contact multiple resorts to check if their program suits your needs. Some of our readers’ favorites are posted below.
    • Saddlebrook Resort – From junior training to adult programs, this Tampa-based resort features dedicated training for all skill levels based on the renowned Hopman Tennis program. You may even train next to an ATP or WTA star!
    • John Newcombe Ranch – Widely recommended as one of the best camps in the country, the tennis options at Newks feature energetic, educational, and fun camps. In addition to adult programs, Newks Junior Academy caters to younger family members.
    • New England Tennis Holidays at Waterville – Daily programming, complete with individualized instruction and video-guided feedback, sets New England Tennis Holidays at Waterville Valley apart from many competitors.
    • Sea Colony – Delaware’s finest tennis academies for juniors and adults can be found at Sea Colony, with options ranging from daily clinics to tennis camps to private lessons. (pictured below)

  1. Multi-Day Tennis Camps: If you’re looking for a well-planned tennis vacation spread over multiple days, you need to check out any of the multi-day tennis camps offered at some of the resorts featured on TRO. Typically, these are planned with a theme and feature players from all across the country or world, allowing for a great opportunity to meet new friends and tennis partners.

These camps can range from two to five days, allowing anyone to feel like they are back at summer camp again. While some resorts keep the included programming strictly to tennis, others include wine tours, off-resort excursions, spa treatments, dinners, and parties. Like the other programs offered, typically you can attend by yourself and meet new players at the camps, book with a friend or spouse, or bring along your entire team or group of friends from the courts you play at back home. We do recommend that you research this option and book well in advance! Some of the most popular locations on TRO that offer multi-day camps are listed below.
    • Gstaad Palace (Roy Emerson Tennis Weeks) – Summer in Switzerland shouldn’t be spent just hiking or enjoying the local cuisine. Gstaad Palace offers world-class camps that many adults enjoy on a seasonal basis. These camps are led by 28-time Grand Slam winner Roy Emerson.
    • Omni Amelia Island Resort – Part of the Cliff Drysdale family, this stunning resort has everything from clinics and multi-day camps to long weekend retreats, many of which have special themes.
    • Stan Smith at Sea Pines – Ideal for the competitive junior star, Hilton Head is home to one of the nation’s most iconic academies. (pictured below)
